Sleeping under the stars

"It shows, does it? I was afraid of that. Well, nevertheless, this should prove interesting to say the least." He is nothing if not fond of challenges. "I do have one request. A relatively simple one: try not to get us killed." He’s going to toss the keys in her general direction. Catch.

"Observing subtle cues is a forte of mine; don’t be too-" Before she could finish her comment the keys were tossed. Her hand flew up and closed around them with quick reflexes. A cool smile settled on her features as she lifted one brow. "I think I can manage not killing us." She then swept her free hand out towards the door, "Lead the way."

Physical distance was going to be the game for now. With little to do Evelyn had been meandering around the area when she sensed... someone. The vibe was familiar yet distinctly different from what she could recall. The one thing she was certain off, though, was that this was a god. Being neither mortal nor god she found that keeping a respectful distance was often the best course of action until the situation changes. And so the spirit prowled about, waiting and observing quietly. //ooc: Hi!

    It was not unusual to spot Loki out in the wilds, yanking plants from the ground, gathering fruits from trees, and crossing off items in a journal he held close to him as he moved about. This was, to put a name to it, his gathering day, a day when he renewed his supply of potion ingredients. While a good portion of these things could be found on Midgard, purchased in occult shops or even found growing in his garden, there were some things that could not be found here. Realm-specific plants and herbs and fruits and the like that required him to teleport to said realm, gather what he needed as quickly as possible (because if someone found him and alerted Asgard of his presence, who knows what would happen to him considering, to the Gods, he was dead), and return to his home.

    Currently, he was inspecting an herb growing by the base of a tree, his fingers smoothing over the leaves, inspecting the stalk, judging if it was of good enough quality to be placed in a potion at some later date.

Of course, it was the squeak that alerted the pair—God and raven both—to the presence of another, provided that inkling had not already. Keir’s charcoal eyes unblinkingly stared at where the sound had come from while Loki visibly bristled, turning darkening eyes towards the strange individual. “Is there a reason why you are hiding?” Came his sharp tone. It was always best to be wary on other realms that weren’t Midgard, as it was impossible to tell who would recognize him (had they not already) and who would tattle to Asgard about spotting him. It was best to find out the latter option quickly, that way he could move fast and do whatever needed to be done to stop said individual, and he found that being snappy tended to do just the trick.

The defiant ones were always the snitches.

Evelyn parted her lips to allow a defeated sigh to leave her. There was no helping it now; might as well show herself. With a quiet grunt she rose from her hiding place and brushed off the bits of leaves and twigs that stubbornly clung to her clothing. “In my experience when observing someone or something interesting it’s best to give them a little space.” She answered coolly. Her hands came up and undid the tie that held her hair back, shaking it out as cyan hues watched the god and his familiar closely.

“I have more than enough from my own, believe me.”

“Ah. In that case, we’ll have to get you some practice. It might not be useful where you’re from, but you never know when it might come in handy here. Besides, it’s not all that hard. I bet I could have you maneuvering the roads confidently by the end of the day.”

"Oh, I can tell. You’ve got that haggard look about you in that regard."

Evelyn folded her arms and let a lopsided smile crawl across her face. “Being prepared for a variety of situations does play to my interests. I can’t help but think there is a joke somewhere in that- a man of tech teaching a nature spirit how to drive…” She chuckled, “I look forward to the lesson.”

    As he foraged about, tucking the collected plants and the like into a small satchel being carried with him, he felt a very faint, pressing feeling in the back of the head. Usually this feeling was attributed to another’s presence or watchful eyes placed upon him, sometimes both. While he turned to glance over his shoulder, he spotted nothing but foliage and the odd bird or two, and since the feeling was faint, he assumed it was likely just an animal, determining if he was a hunter of sorts perhaps.

    As Loki returned to his work, he whistled suddenly, the sort of whistle used to attract someone’s attention, and directly afterwards, a raven came drifting down from the tree he was crouched beside. Something was in the raven’s beak, which Loki took from it and placed in the satchel, before he muttered something akin to a “thank you”.

Evelyn noiselessly worded a string of observations to herself as she leaned in closer to the brush. Determining his identity was gradually crawling towards her the longer she studied him. His presence was indeed familiar to her, the presence of an entity that had a better hold in the minds of mortals than she never did; one that was better known…

When he turned his gaze over his shoulder her ears stiffened, quickly followed by the rest of her body. Her gaze went unblinking until he return to collecting after which she let out a faint breath she had been unwittingly holding. When the raven was called she allowed her sights to go to the bird and watched the exchange play out.

The spirit lowered a hand from her knee to support herself and moved to press it to the ground. Being so fixated on observing, she had made herself blind to her immediate surroundings until after her palm touched something coarse and furry. A large field mouse screeched in protest of being squished made Evelyn jump and rip her hand away. The sudden jerk was anything but quiet and immediately she knew there wasn’t much worth in hiding. The question was what was going to happen next and what she would do in response.

Observation from afar had been a long standing tradition for Evelyn. Often it was easier to stand back in her cervine skin and watch those that caught her eye. And that was how the spirit found herself this evening. She stood in her cervine form with her back to the setting sun, her cyan eyes watching the woman carefully from a distance.

maidenannette:

It was time to return home before nightfall truly settled. Annette walked as quickly as possible before she was caught under the shadowy blanket of Nyx’s heart. Around these lands, it would be unwise to get caught unguarded.

The children of the night came at unexpected times and certainly she wouldn’t want to risk being a part of the unexpected. The blonde woman had apparently ran too recklessly; in a blink of an eye, she found herself on the gravel and hissing in pain. Annette sat up straight and started to brush off the pieces of granite on the palm of her hand. She wasn’t unscathed since there was a bloody scratch on her palm. Annette sighed heavily shaking her head.

There was hardly a human soul out and about at this time. It wasn’t particularly surprising, but she had been accustomed to at least a few being walking around. Thus far she had only spotted the hustling woman, whom now sat on the gravel road.

Curiosity gnawed at the spirit until she finally decided to come in for a closer look. The cervine lowered her head as she approached, and then suddenly stopped to browse. From the corner of her eye she watched the woman carefully, hoping the guise of a regular, albeit patchwork colored, deer would allow new suspicions to arise.

I will be taking a trip up to Maine to a friend’s house where we and about 16 other friends are going to make a tent colony in the 5 acre field behind her house. Grilling, beach, strolling around in Portsmouth, Cards Against Humanity, s’mores… typical summer stuff. I’m leaving Friday afternoon and will be back Sunday evening.

:)

“I’d be worried about you if you didn’t. We can agree that, for the time being, it would be best if you distanced yourself from our work.”

“Sorry to hear that. But, sometimes a new start is exactly what we need, and I doubt it’s as hard to navigate as the swamps.”

“Speaking of navigating, have you had any luck with improving your driving skills?”

"The likewise can be said about you with my activities. I’m sure you have your hands full with alien visitors and don’t need tricksters from my realm bothering you."

Evelyn waved her hand as if brushing something off, “A shelter is a shelter. But you are right, climbing mountain sides is a nice change from slogging through swamps. As for driving, I can’t say it has. You don’t really find cars hanging around in my realm. I haven’t exactly been behind the wheel since that last time.”

{NO, BUT I DO NOT REALLY CARE.}

He slowly tilted his massive helm, six red optics looking down at Evelyn.

{WHY DO YOU ASK?}

"I try to make it a habit to learn the names of the interesting folk I encounter." Cyan eyes met his optics and studied them closely, flames still dancing at her fingertips. "So by what name should I call you?"
